Randy Keeler

RandyWhy do you enjoy teaching at Bluffton? What makes it unique?
I like the fact that we are a Mennonite institution, but we are also diverse so there is a good interaction which can occur. I graduated from Bluffton, so there is a special connection. We're committed to Anabaptist tradition, but sensitive to all faith traditions.

What excites you about teaching in the religion/youth ministry department?
It's great to be teaching with colleagues who are fairly young. It excites me to be helping to prepare a new generation of church leaders.

  • I knew I was destined to teach religion/ministry when...

In 10th grade I felt called to do something with Christian education. I liked the idea of teaching, but I pursued working with youth. As a youth pastor, I taught Sunday school. I came to Bluffton as campus pastor and I taught one class because the job required it. That changed and I was teaching sometimes three classes at a time. Now I am teaching full-time. As I look back, everything I did led to the culmination of what I'm doing now.

  • Favorite class to teach...

Spiritual Disciplines. First Year Seminar because I enjoy being the first contact that freshmen get with college academic reality. There's not a course I don't like.

Favorite time on campus...
Thursday Chapel. I've attended almost every Chapel at Bluffton in the 20 years I've been here. If I'm on campus, I'm at Chapel.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy...
Working out, golfing, skiing, spending time with the family. I'm always reading something. I also ref high school soccer.

My favorite elementary/middle/high school teacher was who and why...
Mrs. Moyer, first grade. I was hit by a car and broke my leg in first grade. Because of this, I was in a wheel chair and she was the one who would help carry me up an down the stairs in the school.

My first job was...
I delivered newspapers in middle school. It was a weekly paper. There was a big hill on the main street where I grew up so it made taking a bike on my route difficult. I got five bucks a month from that job which at the time seemed like a lot of money.

As a college student, I was involved in...
I played soccer, was on Student Senate, participated in campus Bible studies, ran track. They tried to move me from the 100 meter to the 800 meter and that did not work so I only did track for one year. I got married my junior year.

Favorite vacation destination/activity...
Colorado. My oldest son lives there. He works at a ski resort. We go out in the summer and go golfing.

Someday I would like to...
Write a book. I've written articles and chapters in a book. The topic would maybe be youth ministry, spiritual disciplines or focus on faith and fitness.
