Trevor Bechtel

Trevor BechtelWhat excites you the most about teaching religion?
I'm excited by the way it gives me the opportunity to talk about the ways I see God animating life.  Part of the way I do this is through engaging cultures and being involved with the Anabaptist Bestiary Project.

  • When did you first know that you wanted to be a religion professor?

When I was at Canadian Mennonite College I thought it would be a fun thing to do. It's not an easy thing to get a job into. But I wanted to be open to do that.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?
I like teaching Biblical Worldview because you have the opportunity to teach people when they are beginning. I like to teach the upper levels because I can relate to the struggles they have. Each class is good in its own way. My teaching style feeds off the students.

What is your favorite place on campus?
I really like the creek. It's a drag walking between Centennial and the religion department. However I enjoy interacting with water many times throughout the day. I also like that the riparian watershed has been kept intact along the creek.

When you are not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
Frisbee football. Music. Going out to eat and cooking nice meals.

What was the first job you ever had?
Working at Environment Canada in the acid rain prevention authority. I worked there as a student intern as part of my college experience.

What extracurricular activities were you involved in when you were a college student?
Music. I sang in choirs and was involved with student-formed rock and roll bands. Playing and writing music. It takes a lot of energy, but it is something I like.

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?
I went to Costa Rica last Christmas and really enjoyed that. Unlike other places I have visited, it was a place that I wanted to go back to right away.

What is your specific area of interest/expertise in religion?
The ethics of biblical interpretation and the role of the body in biblical interpretation. "Theological Hermeneutics" is the technical term.

What are some things on your 'bucket list'?
I don't know that I have a bucket list. I've got a job that allows me to do things that I like. Being involved with students and music. I'll probably end up publishing some books. I would also like to have a real record label release an album of my music.
