Mark Rupp '09
At Bluffton, Mark Rupp ’09, from Lyons, Ohio, was involved in music every day as a member of Camerata Singers, and Accent!, an all male chorus. He was also the worship leader for Sunday Night Worship his senior year and participated in many music concerts and events.
The sense of community at Bluffton remains a strong value to Rupp. “One of the most important things for me about life after graduation was continuing to live with a strong community sense. As someone who feels called toward ministry, I have become more and more convinced that being the Church is about learning what it means to live in community,” he said.
As part of his Mennonite Voluntary Service (MVS) assignment, Rupp serves as the Vision Leader at the Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson, Kan., where he designs and implements a music program for all ages and also supervises and creates programming for teens. “I find myself writing education objectives in the Bluffton format that I learned during my education classes,” he said.
But most rewarding to Rupp is being able to work with the youth. “The opportunities I have for one-on-one conversations with students opens my eyes to the potential that is wrapped up in doing youth work. It can be very humbling to think that I have the opportunity to offer one of the, sometimes few, positive relationships in the lives of these students,” said Rupp. “It is these times that keep me focused on why I signed up for MVS in the first place.”
