The Disabled Veterans Associations Crisis Services Team is looking for volunteers for their crisis telephone line.  Prior to working, volunteers would learn how to assess for lethality and de-escalate situations where Veterans or family memebers are at risk.  All DVA Crisis Services volunteers who wish to answer calls that come through the crisis line begin with 40 hours of training.  After that, volunteers spend time listening to crisis calls before actually answering calls themselves.  Opportunities are availabe at the Hotline for students completing practicums and/or internships.  If interested, call Crisis Services Director at 440-885-1944.

The annual undergraduate psychology conferance will be held this year at Manchester College on March 30th.  Undergrads are encouraged to present a research project or poster project they have been working on or completed earlier.  This is a great opportunity and looks great on a resume for graduate school or other psychology related positions!  Students wishing to present must contact Will Slater and have the title of his or her presentation to him by Friday, March 23 at noon.  The department will pay the attendance fee and transportation will be provided.  Attending students will leave campus at 7:30am and return by 5:00pm and will be excused from all classes.  Will Slater and Sean Ridge are able to answer any questions concerning the trip!

It's official! The Psychology Department is pleased to announce the addition of Lynette Jacobs-Priebe to our very talented faculty. Here is the announcement from the Dean's newletter:

"I am happy to announce that Lynette Jacobs-Priebe has accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychology.  Lynette expects to defend her dissertation at Vanderbilt University this spring.  In her dissertation she is developing a social norms approach to violence against women prevention.  She brings experience working as an apprentice on a small organic vegetable farm based on the community support agricultural model, coordinating students’ participation in service learning, and participating in coordination of on-going congregational activities designed to enhance dialogue on hospitality.  We look forward to Lynette’s joining our faculty next fall."

        -Sally Weaver Sommer

Welcome Lynette!!!

Pam sent out an email about a position available in New Orleans for graduates (the position requires at least a bachelor's degree). Here is some information:

"MCC Central States is recruiting for a full-time, salaried worker based at the Twomey Center for Peace through Justice, Loyola University New Orleans.

This position will coordinate and facilitate two initiatives of the Twomey Center. One is the Global Facilitator Service Corp (GFSC) project.  MCC is funding two GSFC workshops for the Central City community, and five others are being planned in 2007.  Help is needed with coordination, administration and follow-up on these workshops.  In addition, the MCC worker will benefit from learning to be a facilitator of these workshops.  The GFSC portion of the worker's position will constitute approximately 75% of her/his time until August 2007, when it will drop to approximately 25% for the rest of the two-year term.

The second initiative is to assist with the rebuilding of the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) in schools.  This nationally renowned program was implemented in 10 New Orleans public schools prior to the 2005 Gulf Coast Disasters.  There is a need for the program as evidenced by the violence in the New Orleans area, particularly impacting youth as both perpetrators and victims.  The Twomey Center has an opportunity in several schools and after-school programs to implement the program, but lacks the capacity to effectively do so.  The MCC worker will lead the effort to re-establish this program, constituting 25% of his/her time until August 2007, and approximately 75% thereafter.

This position will have a two-year term and includes benefits such as:  vacation, medical, dental and optical coverage; life insurance and continuing education funding.  Because of the significant expectations for this position, MCC and the Twomey Center - along with the worker - will evaluate the workload on an ongoing basis and some duties may be shifted to volunteers when necessary."

Some important information that Pam has just recently sent out about the faculty position:

"I am pleased to announce that during the first two weeks of Spring semester classes, we will be bringing to campus three candidates for the faculty position in Psychology and to invite you all to take advantage of opportunities to meet these candidates and to provide us feedback about them.  Your feedback will be helpful to us as we make decisions about to whom we will offer the position.

If you are unable to attend the lunch but would like to see the candidates present, there will be two opportunities for you to do so during each of their visits.  Each of the candidates will be making both a class presentation and a research presentation (to which the larger faculty & staff will be invited).  The names of the candidates and the schedules and locations of their presentations are given below.  Feel free to come to any of these presentations (as space permits)."

At the end of October, there will be one in Columbus, OH that Dr. Slater is possibly attending, but any students wishing to go must express interest very soon (for more information or to RSVP email Jenny). There are also a few in the spring, including the "21st Annual Ohio Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference" at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. Recently Dr. Nath sent out an email with opportunities for all Psych majors and minors. If you did not receive it, here is the information. If you would like to make sure that you are included in future emails of this type, please either email me or Pam.
Here is the information:

1)  Debra Fink of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences is going to be in the area this week and is willing to meet with students this Wed to talk about pursuing a graduate degree in social work (one of the routes that a psychology major can take to becoming a counselor). I am writing to see if any of you would have interest in meeting with her.  If you do, please let me know this as soon as possible so that we can work at getting a time set up.  Thanks!!!  By the way, you might be interested to know that Malissa Takacs who works in the Admissions Office is a graduate of the Mandel School.

2)  Secondly, I wanted to pass on some information about an event being held this week by the BGSU National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (a group for persons with chronic mental illness and/or their families and friends) Megan Ginter, the president of this group writes:  "On October 3rd and 4th we will be holding our Mental Illness Awareness Week Conference. We will have six speakers coming in. On October 3rd, the topic is suicide, and guest speakers include The LINK, Paula Lambert, and Monika Lewis. The event will start at 7pm in the ballroom in the BGSU Student Union. On the 4th we will concentrate on mental health on campus and getting help. The Wellness Connection will give a presentation entitled, “Stress Survival”, Dr. Charles Burke will speak about choosing a therapist, and the BGSU Counseling Center will speak on how to help a friend that is struggling. On the 4th we will be in the Meliti Alumni Center in their first floor conference room. This conference is free and open to the public. Please pass the word along to your department and encourage your students to attend. It should be a very informative conference. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at meggierenee@yahoo.com."
