Bluffton University has announced its 2014 May Day court, which was elected by the student body and will be honored during the annual May Day celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, on the Centennial Hall lawn. 

The court includes King Jared Horstman and Queen Lindsay Krohn, both seniors, along with senior escorts Derrick Baksa and Jordan McFarland, senior attendants Tamara Al-Sammarraie and Rachel Duncan, and junior chairpersons Joe Schaer and Sara Klenke.

Horstman is a history education major from Cloverdale, Ohio. A Maypole dancer on May Day as a first-year student, he is a member of the University Chorale, Gospel Choir, Camerata Singers and the People’s Movement for the Advancement of History (history club).

Krohn, from Marysville, Ind., is majoring in middle childhood education. She has been a member of the volleyball team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as a resident adviser, student ambassador and member of SERVE, a student service organization.

An English education major, Baksa is from Paulding, Ohio. He played football at Bluffton and has been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also been active in intramurals.

McFarland, president of Bluffton’s Student Senate, is an information technology major from New Carlisle, Ohio. He has also been a resident adviser and involved in SERVE.

The Student Senate vice president, Al-Sammarraie is from Baghdad, Iraq. She is majoring in early childhood education and seeking an early childhood generalist endorsement. She is a C. Henry Smith Scholar; a member of the Bluffton Education Organization, International Connection and the Student Alumni Association; and a student assistant in the advancement office.

Also an early childhood education major, Duncan is from Northwood, Ohio. Her campus activities have included volleyball and intramurals.

Schaer, from North Lawrence, Ohio, is a youth ministry major. He has been a member of the Shining Through music ministry team, a student ambassador, president of the Peace Education and Action Community Endeavor (P.E.A.C.E.) Club and active in the May Day musical.

Klenke is a psychology major from Coldwater, Ohio. She is a Kit Guide (orientation leader) and a member of Student Senate, the University Chorale and the Honors Program.

May Day is one of the oldest traditions at Bluffton. In addition to the crowning of the king and queen, the day’s events include the Maypole dance and recognition of graduating seniors.
