Watch your mailbox during the first week of classes for information about auditions and first rehearsals for all of the performing groups. Some groups have auditions, while others have open first rehearsals for all interested participants. Even when an audition is required, expect a friendly, non-threatening setting!
NO! All of the performance groups are open to students of any major and any class rank. Traditionally, the ensembles include a majority of non-music majors.
YES! Instruments are available on loan at no charge to music department ensemble members. Instrument lockers are also available for your personal instruments.
Participating in music will improve your life at Bluffton! Not only will it enhance your social life, but students who participate in music get better grades and find music a release from the tensions of college life. You will have a group to identify with and performances to take pride in.
Students may register for ensemble credit and receive a grade. Keep in mind that tuition cost allows you to take up to 17 semester hours and ensemble credits may count towards the total number of hours required for graduation. This gives a student taking the normal 15-semester hour load the opportunity to register for ensemble credit at no additional cost!
The music department offers private lessons in voice, piano, organ and most band/orchestral instruments. One or two semester hours of "applied music" credit are available for weekly, half or full hour lessons. Even if you have already registered, you can add applied music to your schedule by contacting the music department office during the first week of classes. An additional fee is charged and you will receive a grade at the end of the semester.
