What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?
I enjoy working with students to whom mathematics comes easily and with students who struggle with math; I enjoy explaining concepts to them in ways that they can understand.
What age were you when you discovered you wanted to teach?
I was 24 years old. Until I was in graduate school I was sure that I didn't want to teach.
What is your favorite subject to teach, and why?
Calculus because when I teach that class I have students with a variety of backgrounds and majors in the class.
Where is your favorite place/season/event on Bluffton's campus?
Spring. I like the excitement at the end of the year, and students are getting ready to graduate, there is a feeling of moving on, and the campus is turning green.
Who were your favorite teachers in high school and middle school?
In high school my favorite was the math teacher who taught pre-calculus and computer programming.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee, attending Bluffton sporting events, coaching the soccer teams of my two boys.
What was the first job you ever had?
From sixth grade and all through high school I was a paper boy.
What kinds of activities did you participate in when you attended college?
I attended Bluffton; it was named Bluffton College at that time. I was in the choir, band, plays and musicals. I also played intramurals sports such as volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee.
Where is somewhere that you would like to visit?
I would like to visit Central America and attend my church's sister church in Honduras
What is on your "bucket list"?
Our house is more than 140 years old and I would like to finish all the little things around the house. I would also like to learn more about woodworking and making furniture.
