Mathematics, Computer Science and Technology

The Bluffton University MCST Department:

  • prepares mathematics majors for a wide variety of vocations and professional positions that value analytical reasoning skills, mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. Our students have found positions in business, industry, actuarial mathematics, teaching and graduate school. Others have found careers in other professional positions as diverse as law, music and the pastorate.
  • provides computer science (CS) majors with current, comprehensive knowledge of computer science, with a strong problem-solving orientation designed to prepare students for professional careers or graduate study in this ever-growing field. CS majors have entered the work force, or gone to graduate school in computer science or engineering fields.
  • helps information technology (IT) majors to build a broad-based understanding of digital media, programming languages and information technology issues along with critical thinking and communications skills. Bluffton graduates can expect to pursue careers in business, education and non-profit organizations as project developers, project managers, IT educators, and specialists in IT and media applications.
  • exposes information systems (IS) majors to a blend of computer science, economics, business administration and accounting and information systems management courses within a liberal arts program. The information systems major includes seven computer science courses and an introduction to key elements of accounting, economics, management, marketing and the design of information systems. The major can be augmented by optional internships in business or industry, and coursework which develops communication and problem-solving skills.  Graduates pursue careers involving the use and management of information within a business or organization.

We also serve other departments by offering courses appropriate for students in business, social sciences, physical and life sciences and elementary education, and minors in mathematics, CS, and IT which complement majors in those areas.
