Welcome to the class of 2011! This year's First Year Student reading assignment is Wisdom for a Livable Planet [Trinity University Press, 2005] by Dr. Carl McDaniel, professor of biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
On Tuesday, August 28, McDaniel will present "Creating Our Future: Stories, Beliefs, Actions" as the address for this year's opening convocation. McDaniel will discuss his book, Wisdom for a Livable Planet, which focuses on the studies of eight environmental visionaries and how they are working to protect the world around them.
From the publisher's website: Wisdom for a Livable Planet offers equal parts education and inspiration for readers looking for an introduction to today's critical environmental issues. Author and biologist Carl N. McDaniel profiles eight path breakers who have dedicated their lives to improving the ecological health of our communities. The result is a portrait of hard-won environmental wisdom and a blueprint for taking action.
