The Kent State Shootings Oral History Project collects, records, and provides access to oral history accounts pertaining to the May 4, 1970, shootings and their aftermath. Kent State University was placed in an international spotlight after a tragic end to a student demonstration against the Vietnam War and the National Guard. Shortly after noon on that Monday, 13 seconds of rifle fire by a contingent of 28 Ohio National Guardsmen left four students dead, one permanently paralyzed, and eight others wounded. Eyewitness accounts and accounts from a wide variety of viewpoints are included: faculty, alumni, staff, and administrators who were on campus that day, residents of the city of Kent, National Guardsmen, police, hospital personnel, and other persons whose lives were affected by these historic events. |
