James Grandey

Why do you enjoy teaching at Bluffton? What makes it unique?
Through teaching, I get to meet students outside of athletics.

What excites you about teaching health, fitness and sport science?
We have such a great group of faculty. We are all at about the same age and have young families. We are all working towards making this program as successful as possible.

I knew I was destined to teach HFSS when…
I knew when I was in college I wanted to be a teacher. In my junior and senior years of high school I knew I wanted to help people learn and it has allowed me to stay involved in athletics.

My favorite class to teach is…
Fit for Life. We teach basic wellness and physical fitness components that students can put to use in everyday life. It is a functional course.

My favorite time on campus…
My favorite time is fall when the leaves fall but I also enjoy spring when everything comes back to life after a long, hard winter.

When I’m not teaching I enjoy…
working with my players on everything; baseball related skills, time management… I also enjoy spending time with my family and golfing. Recruiting is a passion of mine.

My favorite middle school teacher was…
Karen Yeager. She taught seventh and eighth grade math and also kept stats for our baseball team. I hated math but really liked her.

My first job was…
a carryout at a grocery store. I also worked as a baseball umpire.

As a college student, I…
played football and baseball. I was a campus tour guide and a resident advisor for two years. I was also involved in Fellowship of Christian Students, BACCHUS which was an alcohol awareness group and homecoming committee for two years.

My favorite vacation destination/activity is…
Every summer I go to Myrtle Beach with my wife and her family. We play golf almost every day.
