Civil War Class Trip (March 31st- April 2, 2006)
In the spring semester of 2006, Dr. Perry Bush taught a Civil War class that toward the end of the semester took a three day trip to Antietnam battlefield. The trip included visits to Harpers Ferry, South Mountain, and Antietam National Battlefield. Here are some comments from students that participated in the trip:
"Seeing indisputably the bloodiest battlefield in American History was not just an eerily real look at what Sharpsburg Maryland was like in the 1860’s but also how far the south has developed from then. This trip gave my colleagues and me an eye opening look at what geographic obstacles they had to overcome to fight for their respective rights and their families. This trip was a fantastic experience that brought me closer to the others on the trip by thinking about what kind of sacrifices the men made for us close to 150 years ago."

"The trip we took to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia and to Antietam, Maryland was absolutely amazing! It was such a wonderful experience to be able to take what we were learning in class and actually put real and tangible images to it. It was a hollowing (and in some ways scary) experience to be able to walk on the ground that so many men died on when we walked around the Antietam battlefield, and picturing the death and carnage that occurred there over a century ago. It is an experience that I’m sure none of us will forget."

"The Civil War experience was an experience of a lifetime. It helped us understand the implications of what the war was about on a personal level. Even though we went to two places (Antietam and Harper’s Ferry), we were able to get an experience that couldn’t be visualized in a classroom."

Wright-Patterson AFB/Freedom Center (November 11, 2006)
The History Department and Club recently co-sponsored a trip to visit the U.S. Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio and the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
