Guy Neal

Guy NealWhat do you enjoy the most about teaching?
Working with a student, a player, a team or a class and experience helping them grow and improve.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?
Coaching Methods. I enjoy sharing what the coaching profession is really about with those who might be thinking about going into coaching.

What elements from coaching help you in the classroom?
Teaching is teaching. You must possess some basic qualities to be a good teacher with your academic class or with your athletic team. You must have a solid understanding and knowledge of your subject matter. You must be organized. You must have good methodology in order to present and communicate your topic to your students in various ways so that the majority of them will grasp your message. You must establish an atmosphere that has focus, enthusiasm and discipline. And you must motivate your students.

When did you first know you wanted to teach?
In the seventh grade I knew I wanted to be a physical education teacher and a coach. I had a junior high health/physical education teacher and coach who I really looked up to and ended up saying, "I want to do what Coach DeVoe is doing someday"

What is your favorite place/ season/ event on campus?
There have been a number of special seasons, teams and players during my 20 years at Bluffton. It is really hard to select one. However, a few highlights would be beating ONU in 1994 at home after they were coming off their national championship year. Our game with Manchester in 1995 when they were undefeated and ranked number one in the country. Founders Hall was packed and we lost on a shot at the buzzer. The nationally-ranked teams of 2006 & 2007 were also very special as was the 2001 team that played for the HCAC championship on the last day of regular season after losing our leading scorer to injury. Coaching HCAC player-of-the-year winners Scott Bergman and Mike Anthony was also very special.

When you are not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family. A coach's family life is very different from most people on campus. Only a coach would really know what I am talking about. Therefore, I cherish time with family. I also enjoy exercising, working around our house and in our yard. I also find great enjoyment from reading.

What was the first job you ever had?
After grad school and being a GA - my first full-time job was as a high school teacher and coach. The first job that I ever received any money for was mowing yards for $5 a yard in the seventh grade.

What extracurricular activities were you involved in when you were a college student?
I played college basketball. The combination of classes and basketball at the division I level kept me really busy!

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?
The outer banks of North Carolina, Florida, Las Vegas or Pennsylvania.

What are some things on your 'bucket list'?
Wow - that list is too long! As far as some items related to Bluffton University. I would like to lead a team to an outright HCAC championship and play in the NCAA tournament.
