Why do you enjoy teaching at Bluffton? What makes it unique?Heather Bruder
The family type atmosphere. There is a good ratio of students to professors. The atmosphere makes it feel like coming home every day.

  • What excites you about teaching health, fitness and sport science?

I want to give my experience as a student and player back to other students and players. With my job, I have an opportunity to make a difference in a very hands-on way every day.

  • My favorite class to teach is...

Sports Psychology. It allows me to engrain both the sports aspect and the mental aspect into students. We explore what it takes for a player to compete at their best. I would have gotten my masters in sports psychology if not for the opportunity I have to coach.

  • My favorite place/time/event on campus...

the softball field. I also enjoy all athletic events. Bluffton is unique because of the way students fill the gym for games. We may not have the best facilities, but the support the teams get is always great.

  • When I'm not teaching I enjoy...

mountain biking. It is a good workout, but it is also cheap. I'm not from Ohio so mountain biking has allowed me to go to some places in the state that I wouldn't normally see. I also like to camp and do other outdoors activities. I enjoy spending time with my niece and nephews; they are a lot of fun to be around.

  • My favorite middle school teacher was...

My mother was my sixth grade teacher. I've gotten a lot of my passion for the classroom from her. She taught me that teaching can be fun. The saying goes that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. I want to at least make students thirsty.

  • My first job was...

I bussed tables at a restaurant. Later I worked at McDonald's. My most challenging job was in college when I moved furniture. After college, I worked with mentally-challenged people because I had a psychology degree.

  • As a college student, I...

played softball for four years and was a four year captain on the team. I was also in Psi Chi, the psychology honors program. I did an independent study on cognitive psychology.

  • Favorite vacation destination/activity is...

Oklahoma City. That is where the Women's College World Series is held. I go out with my twin sister and some of our friends. That's a week I always look forward to.

  • Someday I would like to...

I want to experience things and go places. I try to embrace the moments in my life as they happen. I've been blessed with the opportunity to see a lot of the country through coaching softball.
