What is Family Studies?
American families are frequently presented with many challenges to overcome. Consider that many families face economic uncertainty, marital problems, remarriage, dual-career families, latchkey children, quality child care issues, family violence, eldercare, financial difficulties, and possibly even homelessness.
A humanitarian and faith-based nation has created many institutions to serve these needs and solve the problems families face. Service agencies, hospitals, child-care centers, halfway houses, latch-key after-school programs, church based family services, senior citizen centers, camps, women's shelters and many other service facilities all need skilled professionals to provide support to families.
This major is designed to provide a broad base for students who would like to prepare for careers serving families. Home life and family life is at the foundation of the disciplines of family and consumer sciences (FCS). Since the early 20th century, FCS has established the tradition of service for families and consumers. A people-oriented profession that is service oriented, the overall goal is to be a constructive force for the family and its individual members.
