Food and Nutrition: Dietetics Major

Dietetics is a profession concerned with the science and practice of human nutritional care. A Registered Dietitian (RD) is an allied medical professional who puts into practice the science and art of food and nutrition in the service of people, individuals, families, and communities. In Ohio, as in most other states, a registered dietitian must also be a Licensed Dietitian (LD). The first step in becoming a Registered and Licensed Dietitian is to complete a baccalaureate degree in an accredited dietetics curriculum. The Bluffton University program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association  (Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL  60606-6995).

As a graduate in dietetics, students are eligible to apply for a hospital or other accredited internship program. Following completion of this internship, graduates are eligible to take the national registration examination, which in Ohio is the state licensure exam. Successful completion makes the graduate a registered and licensed dietitian.

The Bluffton University dietetics program has maintained a high success rate. If you compare us to other dietetics programs you will find:

  • all of our students get practical/applied experience in local hospitals, nursing homes, or community agencies.
  • 93% of our graduates have passed the registration examination on their first attempt (100% on second attempt)..
  • 98% of our graduates have been placed in ADA internship positions within a year of graduation.
