Writing major/minor
The writing major and minor provide a flexible way to pursue a career in writing. You can choose to focus your coursework in creative writing or in professional and technical writing. The minor allows you to explore an interest in writing while majoring in another academic discipline.
Introductory and advanced writing courses are taught by published writers who practice what they teach. Fiction courses are taught by
Susan Streeter Carpenter, whose novel
Riders on the Storm will be published in spring 2010.
Jeff Gundy, who teaches poetry and nonfiction, has published five books of poems, most recently
Spoken among the Trees (Akron, 2007) which won the Society of Midland Authors Poetry Award. Gundy also contributed to the book
Making Poems: Forty Poems with Commentary by the Poets, which was published in 2010.
In addition, you may learn from visiting writers. Guest authors who have presented on campus in the past have included Scott Russell Sanders, Li-Young Lee, Karen Joy Fowler, Mary Grimm, John Drury, William Stafford, Gwendolyn Brooks, Andrew Hudgins, Charles Baxter, Nikki Giovanni, Erin McGraw, David Baker, Clayton Eshleman, Stephen Corey, Janet Kauffman, Jean Janzen, Julia Kasdorf, Keith Ratzlaff, and many more.
Students have a range of publication options available, including
The Shalith, a student literary journal
; The Bluffton Connection, the online student newspaper; and a webzine,
Inspiration Point. Bluffton students have published work in journals including
Georgetown Review and
Cedarville Review.
This major can be completed in three years if you are a dedicated and ambitious student.
