Quality of teacher education in Ohio

The Praxis II tests are required by Title II, section 207 of the Higher Education Act (1998.) The purpose of the tests and the reports which follow are to 1) inform the public about the quality of teacher preparation and, ultimately, 2) to improve the quality of teaching. The Ohio Department of Education requires passing grades on the Praxis II assessments of content knowledge and pedagogy for licensure.

In the reports which follow, you will see results both for Bluffton University and for all of Ohio. We at Bluffton report the names and licensure programs of all candidates who complete our teacher education programs in order for pass rates for Bluffton to be calculated. It is important to note that Bluffton does not require passing Praxis scores for a candidate to be a completer. This is in keeping with the spirit of the Title II legislation. We do not artificially inflate our pass rate by excluding candidates who are not successful on their Praxis tests.

We ask that our candidates take speciality test(s) prior to clinical practice so we can be confident that they know the content. They must pass the test of pedagogy and the content tests before receiving their Ohio teaching licenses. Our policy is to work with students who are having difficulty until they have success or until they choose to stop trying to pass the test.
