The traditional route to becoming a teacher in Ohio involves completing a bachelors degree then obtaining a teaching license from the Ohio Department of Education.
Adolescent to young adult (AYA)
Ages 12-21 and grades 7-12
At Bluffton, you may choose a licensure program in one of four academic areas to teach in grades 7-12. A teaching license is received by completing a major in a content area, licensure requirements for that area and professional education courses. The areas in which an adolescent/young adult license may be sought are:
- Integrated language arts
- Integrated mathematics
- Integrated social studies
- Life science
TESOL endorsement prepares students to teach English to speakers of other languages in classrooms in this country. The endorsement can be added to any teaching license.
Multi-age
Ages 3-21 and Pre-K through grade 12
You may choose a teaching licensure program in several areas, which permit you to teach across a broader age range in a specific content area. Multi-age licensure programs are offered in the areas of:
- Health (students are strongly encouraged to get both health & physical education licensure)
- Physical education
- Music
- Visual arts
