The Pre-Med Club

The Bauman Medical Society is a student organization.  Any student interested in an area of health care is welcome to attend meetings and join events held by the club.  The purpose of the organization is to enable students interested in a medical career to experience and investigate different aspects of the field of medicine and prepare themselves in the best way possible to be candidates in a health-related field.  Practice MCAT sessions are also planned to prepare test takers for the stresses of taking the test.  The organization plans to visit at least 2 medical colleges each year.  The executive committee is elected by the members of the club.  The 2003-2004 executive committee is Ruth Abaya, Jared Bussinger, and Jenny Lehman.  The Bauman Medical Society is advised by science professors Dr. Angie Montel and Dr. Steve Steiner.  For more information and pictures from the BMS visit their homepage.  The society has been named in honor of Harvey and Ella Garber Bauman, who both graduated from Bluffton College with the class of 1919.  Following graduation, they both became physicians and worked as medical missionaries in India for over 30 years.  Many of their descendants have also graduated from Bluffton College and have entered the medical field.

Getting into Medical School

There are many resources for students to take advantage of when exploring the field of medicine. This page contains a few valuable sites and links to various medical schools within Ohio.

·American Medical College Application Service   This service allows you to complete a universal application that many medical colleges will accept.  If the medical college of your choice does not accept this application, then you must visit the college's website or contact that college for an application.  Application to medical school is typically completed in the fall of your senior year at Bluffton, although some schools have an early admissions program.  Check out each school's website for information on early admission.

·Ready to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)??  This test is required for admission to most medical schools.  The test consists of 3 multiple choice sections (Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences) and a writing section. The test is offered twice during the year, in April and August, and should be completed during your junior year at Bluffton.  If you take the exam in April, you will have the August session as a backup in case you need to try for an improved score. Check out the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) website for practice tests.  Another good source of practice tests and strategy ideas is Kaplan.  Hint:  Take as many practice tests as you can but not the night before you take the test.  Don't panic or allow yourself to become overwhelmed by the test.
