Louie's Nite Club has been a part of Lima for
almost 70 years. Located on the corner of Main and McKibben,
for two thirds of a century now, Louie's has been giving the
people living in North Lima a place to go to enjoy a bite to eat
and a cold beer with others from their neighborhood. It was in
1933, shortly after the repeal of Prohibition, that Louie C. Daley
opened Louie's Nite Club. In 1934 it was just a little place where
people could come to get a beer for a nickel and enjoy some Italian
spaghetti. Since it was a predominately Catholic neighborhood, they
served fish on Fridays. Louie died in 1939 but the club stayed
within the family, run by his sisters and their husbands. When
Louie's sons, Ferdinand and Louie Jr., got out of the Army Air
Corps after serving in World War II, they took over the job of
running the club.
Louie's has always been a family oriented business. Serving three
generations of Lima customers, they have provided a lot for North
Lima. In the 1940's and 1950's there was live entertainment at
Louie's. They would bring in different bands to entertain their
patrons. That was not all the provided. Louie's has given back
to Lima by sponsoring many different activities such as softball
and bowling teams in Lima. They also sponsor St. Jude's telethon
every year.
Louie's is now owned by Ferdinand Daley and his son Ronnie helps
run the bar. Ferdinand's brother Louie is there on most days too.
It is still a family oriented
place, serving the children and grandchildren of some of
their first patrons. You can't get a beer for a nickel or
spaghetti anymore like in the 1930's, but Louie's is
famous for a good tenderloin. There are
a lot of different pictures, sports memorabilia, and other
interesting artifacts hung on the walls. You could even ask
about Louie and Ferdinand's sister who dated Joe DiMaggio;they
have a picture of them too. Louie's Nite Club is just a nice
place to go to enjoy a little bit of the history of the Old
North End.
