The Ethnic Roots of the Old North End


While the Old North End never was or became a heavily ethnic neighborhood to the same degree as a "Chinatown" or "Little Italy" found in other cities, it did acquire an ethnic flavor all its own which would last for several decades. Not long after rows of houses broke the skyline on the north edge of Lima and a coherent neighborhood began to take shape at the turn of the twentieth century, the area soon became marked by an ethnic character so pronounced that local residents readily began to refer to it as "Irishtown."
