Bluffton - On the Road

By Dr. Hans Houshower, vice president for advancement

Hans HoushowerAlumni MapOur feature story highlights a number of recent graduates who are hard at work putting into practice their distinctive education and values. As illustrated by the accompanying map, they are part of an alumni community that includes more than 12,933 alumni in the continental U.S. plus 38 in Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. Territories and 127 in 40 countries. Bluffton's 13,089 alumni are those for whom we have valid addresses, and we know that all are making a significant difference in communities across the country and around the world.

While we live in a digitally connected world, the Bluffton experience continues to emphasize the importance of personal relationships—as part of the academic and co-curricular program, athletics, residence life and beyond graduation. At the same time, we know that only a small percentage of Bluffton alumni are able to return to campus and stay connected "in person."

With this in mind, the university's advancement division is launching a multi-year effort to take Bluffton "on the road," with the goal of increasing opportunities for alumni to visit with university leadership, including Bluffton's president and faculty, where you live. Already in April, President Harder and George Lehman, chair of the division of business studies, visited with alumni employed by Marathon Oil at their place of work, and President Harder was "on the road" in eastern Pennsylvania in May. Through December 2014, we are planning to schedule more than 30 regional events in 15 states.

We are hoping that many alumni will take advantage of these opportunities because we want to visit with you to hear your stories and to benefit from your ideas on ways to enhance Bluffton's programs. Our alumni relations director, Julia Szabo, will keep alumni informed through our website and an alumni e-newsletter. So, if you haven't already, visit and confirm your email address to receive periodic updates. This is also where all alumni can update their address and contact information.

On behalf of the advancement division, we are excited to take Bluffton "on the road" and to visit with many alumni over the coming months.

Best wishes and hoping to meet you "on the road" in 2013-14!
