C. Henry Smith Lecturship

2008-09 C. Henry Smith Peace Lectureship
The C. Henry Smith Trust Directors:  Jim Harder, representing Bluffton University; John J. Smith, representing the Smith family; and James Histand, representing Goshen College; announce the 33rd annual C. Henry Smith Peace Lecture.  A committee composed of the Directors of Peace Studies and Academic Deans of Goshen College and Bluffton University will select a scholar to prepare and present a peace lecture in the colleges and churches.  C. Henry Smith, the distinguished Mennonite historian, gave priority in his will to maintaining and strengthening the peace witness in Mennonite churches.

Nature of project
The C. Henry Smith Peace Lectureship is interpreted broadly to include related media through which the peace witness can be communicated - such as drama, story and visual art as well as a more formal lecture.  Each lecture will be presented publicly at Bluffton University and Goshen College.  Insofar as is possible, lecturers are encouraged to present the lecture in churches and at other colleges.  The lectureship should, whenever possible, highlight a distinctive Anabaptist peace perspective.

Eligibility
The Peace Lectureship provides an opportunity for faculty members of Mennonite-related colleges to strengthen their resources for teaching peace.  First priority will be given to faculty members from Goshen College and Bluffton University - institutions with which C. Henry Smith was long associated and to which he gave special consideration in establishment of the trust.  Second priority will be given to faculty members of other Mennonite-related colleges.  Applications from other people may also be considered insofar as their proposals have significance for the peace witness of Mennonite churches.

Stipend
The lecturer will receive a stipend of $4,000, and up to an additional $2,000, upon approval of the trust directors, for reimbursement of expenses related to research, travel, lecture presentation or publication.  The stipend should make it possible for the lecturer to give the equivalent of one month to preparation of the lecture.

Schedule
The deadline for completed applications is February 18, 2008.  The recipient of the award will be notified no later than March 17, 2008.  The lecture is to be presented during the 2008-09 academic year.

Form of proposals
Proposals are to be presented in the format described in the application materials.  Proposals should be submitted to the Academic Deans at both Bluffton University and Goshen College.
