Beavers salvage split with Ohio Wesleyan
April 13, 2010
BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team struggled to move runners in a home split with Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. The Bishops took advantage of their six hits in the lidlifter to secure a 4-1 victory before Bluffton needed a run in the seventh for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Bluffton moved to 11-14 on the season, while OWU now stands at 14-12 overall
Ohio Wesleyan 4, Bluffton 1
Bluffton starter Kristin Agauas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover) worked three perfect innings to start game one before Ohio Wesleyan took advantage of a leadoff double to left center in the top of the fourth. A walk, a squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly added up to a pair of runs for the visitors before Bluffton could get off the diamond.
The home team finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth when Chelsie Osborne (Chillicothe/Waverly) singled home Allison Radomski (Cincinnati/Christian). That was all the Beavers could manage before the Battling Bishops put the game away with two more tallies in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by pinch-hitter Jackie Kolovich that made the score 4-1.
Agauas fell to 1-3 on the season despite allowing two runs on just two hits in five innings of work. She fanned seven, including five straight in the second and third frames.
Bluffton 3, Ohio Wesleyan 2
Bluffton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two when Stevie Cuttitta (Columbiaville, Mich./Clio) picked up Emily Manahan (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) with an RBI single to left field. Manahan had doubled to left center with two outs.
Following two scoreless innings for both teams, a Bluffton error set up the Battling Bishops for two scores when the visitors singled up the middle twice in the fifth.
Ohio Wesleyan returned the favor in the sixth when a Bishop miscue allowed the Beavers to knot the game at two when Jayme Marbaugh (Ohio City/Parkway) crossed the dish. A pair of one-out infield singles by Bluffton in the seventh brought senior Brooke Babcock (Findlay) to the plate with one down. Her two-bagger just inside the right field line sent Allison Radomski home with the winning run as the Beavers pulled out a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
Torrie Wilson (Delphos/Jefferson) Babcock and Manahan all delivered two hits for the victors. Babcock and Cuttitta both drove in runs for the home team. Babcock worked the final five innings, giving up two runs, none earned, with five strikeouts while improving to 6-6 on the season. Cuttitta did not allow a hit in her two innings in the circle.
Bluffton returns to action with a non-conference trip to Ursuline College on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The first contest in Pepper Pike, Ohio, is slated to start at 1 p.m.
