The 2006 Bluffton University men's tennis season is right around the corner. Coach Blake Kindle is excited to see what this season has in store. "Our goal is obviously to win every match," Kindle explained. "We would like to be at least in the top half of the conference."
Bluffton is coming off a 2005 campaign that saw it go 4-8 for a sixth place finish in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference despite returning only one letter winner from the 2004 season.
The Beavers return their top four players from a year ago, including reigning Freshman of the Year Jordan Zickafoose (Lima/Lima Senior). Zickafoose will again play No. 1 singles for Bluffton. Senior captain Peter Martin (Berne, Ind./South Adams) returns for his final season where he is slotted to play the No. 2 singles. Sophomores Blake Babcock (Findlay/Findlay) and Tim Kauffman (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) will compete for the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.
Kindle expects junior Brandon King (Dalton/Central Christian), sophomore Isaiah Schloneger (Dundee/Central Christian), and newcomer Colin Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) to compete for the No. 5 and 6 singles slots.
The Beavers have diligently worked during the off-season lifting weights three times a week as well as playing twice a week at Orchard Hills in Lima. They also participated in an intersquad tournament in the fall to help hone their skills for the upcoming season.
"We were a very young team last year, but with a year of experience we should come into this season with a better knowledge of how the college game works." Kindle said.
