2013-14 Men's Basketball
Beavers to open at the University of Akron
Oct. 4, 2013
BLUFFTON, Ohio - In less than a month, the Bluffton University men's basketball team will open its 2013-14 campaign with an exhibition contest at Mid-American Conference (MAC) powerhouse Akron. The Beavers will head east on Route 30 and Interstate 71 to battle a Zips squad that finished the 2012-13 season 26-7, won the MAC championship and faced Virginia Commonwealth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Beavers are continuing a recent trend of Division III institutions traveling to NCAA Division I programs for either exhibition contests or early season games. Heartland Conference teams Earlham and Manchester will match up with Bowling Green State University and Butler University, respectively, while Franklin College has battled both Indiana University and Butler recently.
Coach Neal is excited about the opportunity to see Bluffton go head-to-head with the Zips for a number of reasons. The experience of competing with a top-flight NCAA Division I program is at the top of the list, but it will also be a Neal family reunion with 2013 Bluffton graduate Tyler, Coach Neal's son, now serving as a graduate assistant at Akron. In addition, he will get to match wits with longtime friend Keith Dambrot, the head coach for the Zips. Dambrot has fashioned a 210-94 (107-41 MAC) record in nine seasons at Akron and he led the 2012-13 squad to a school record-tying 26 victories.
Bluffton University will be selling pre-sale tickets for the Friday, Nov. 1 exhibition at the James A. Rhodes Arena on the campus of the University of Akron. For information regarding tickets, please contact Coach Neal at firstname.lastname@example.org (419-358-3222) or Chris Gable at email@example.com (419-358-3227). Ticket cost is $10. Those from a distance may reserve tickets, and pick them up at the General Will Call window at the University of Akron if arrangements are made through Bluffton.
