Men's basketball finishes 1-1 at Capital Tip-Off Tournament

The Bluffton College men's basketball team kicked off the 2003-04 season last weekend at the Capital Tip-Off Tournament. Bluffton finished the tournament 1-1, defeating Alma 76-75 and falling to nationally ranked Capital 61-58.
Bluffton 76, Alma 75
In a game that was won by free throws at the end, the Bluffton College men's basketball team (1-0) won their first opener since the 1999-2000 season. The final score was Bluffton 76, Alma 75.
Bluffton led 74-72 with six seconds left in the game. Sophomore Scott Bergman (Elmore/Woodmore) picked up the foul and sank both buckets to widen the Beavers lead 76-72. Alma then took possession of the ball over with two seconds left and sank a half-court three pointer for the final tally, 76-75.
Leading Bluffton on the night was Bergman with 25 points. Senior Brad Boyles ( Berne , Ind. /South Adams) posted 14 points and two assists and freshman Michael Anthony (Ohio City/Delphos St. John's) rounded off the double digit scoring with 12 points. Sophomore Eric Sweet (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) led the team in rebounding with nine for the contest and threw in three blocks.
Bluffton 58, Capital 61
The Bluffton College men's basketball team (1-1) dropped to No. 20 Capital 61-58 on Saturday night. Capital advances to 2-0 on the season. Even with the loss, the Beavers posted an incredible 64 percent shooting percentage(23-36) from the field, Capital posting 46 percent for the game.
Bluffton led at the end of the first half 36-31, shooting 14-of-19 from the field for 74 percent. The Beavers were down by as much as seven in the first to only come back and to lead the game by seven, 29-22 with left before halftime. In the second half the lead would widen again to seven points as Bluffton would hold the contest until the mark. The game would then be tied for the fourth time with 57 seconds left, but Capital would come out in the end with the help of free throw shots.
Senior Brad Boyles ( Berne , Ind. /South Adams ) led Bluffton with 19 points and three assists for the evening. Sophomore Eric Sweet (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) was the other Beaver in double figure scoring with 13 points, leading the team with seven rebounds. Sophomore Scott Bergman (Elmore/Woodmore) also threw in eight points and five rebounds.
Senior Brad Boyles and sophomore Scott Bergman currently lead the Beavers in scoring this year with each chipping in 16.5 points per game. Sophomore Eric Sweet adds 10.5 points per game and leads the Beavers in rebounding with eight rebounds per game. Sophomore Simeon Talley leads the team in assists with six.
