In their 2000 home opener, the Bluffton College baseball team split a pair of games with Manchester College, Ind., taking the first game 6-3 before falling in the second game 7-4.
Manchester entered Sears Field as the defending Heartland Conference champions. It was the first league action for both schools this season.
Bluffton senior Bob Sierer (Paulding), fresh off his no-hitter over Kenyon last Friday in Sarasota, Fla., scattered six hits and struck out four in earning the game one victory. After allowing three runs in the top of the first, Sierer allowed just four base runners the rest of the game.
Sophomore Dustin Kreis (Richwood/North Union) led the Beavers at the plate with a 3-4 performance including a triple and an RBI. Three other players collected two hits each, led by junior Luke Habegger (Berne, Ind./South Adams) with a triple and three RBI.
In the second game, Bluffton scored four runs in the second inning, but it would be their only offensively productive inning of the game as Manchester claimed a 7-4 victory.
Senior Joel Parrett (Oakwood/Paulding) suffered his first loss of the season for BC, as he went six innings, allowing five runs, three of which were earned. Sophomore Todd Pickthorn led BC at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBI.
Manchester's Jeff Meyer belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to take the lead, and two Spartan runs in the seventh were added for insurance.
Bluffton will return to action at home on Saturday for a 1:00 double header against Ohio Northern University.
