Urbana aiming for successful season

Current season record: 6-8

Despite taking on what some basketball analysts consider one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, Urbana University has already won more games this season than they did all of the 1999-2000 season. The Blue Knights returned just five lettermen from last year's 4-24 squad and do not have a senior on this year's team, but Urbana has won five of their last eight games and are headed for a successful season under third year head coach Ken Braun.

Urbana's non-league schedule includes Division I teams Bowling Green and Eastern Kentucky along with NAIA national champions Embry-Riddle and NAIA national tournament teams Campbellsville and Huntington. The Blue Knights also play in the tough American Mideast Conference, which includes Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Saint Vincent, Rio Grande and Walsh, all of which won at least 20 games last season.

The Blue Knights fell to those first five teams by over 21 points per game earlier this season, but have beaten quality NCAA Division III programs Heidelberg and Thomas More this season and posted a 75-73 win over Central State, who finished 23-9 last season.

Urbana's balanced attack is led by 6-5 junior forward Robert Lewis, who is averaging 13.0 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 61% from the floor is complimented well by a pair of post players, 6-8 freshman Jarrod Brumbaugh (6.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and 6-6 junior Greg Hower (6.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg). On the perimeter, 6-0 junior Robin Sischina, an honorable mention All-AMC selection last year, has hit 20 three-pointers and averages 10.3 points per game, while 5-11 freshman Brian Wilson has connected on 21 treys, averages 11.8 points per game and has collected a team-best 43 assists.

Urbana currently ranks in the middle of the pack in the AMC in most offensive and defensive statistics, but the Blue Knights stand out in a couple categories at the defensive end. Opponents are shooting just 31.9% from 3-point land against Urbana, good for a #3 rank in the league. Also, Urbana averages 3.1 blocks per game, which ranks fifth. Brumbaugh and Hower lead the block party with 15 and 13 rejections, respectively.
