FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team could not overcome a rough start and fell to the Dominican University Stars, 10-2, on Thursday, March 10. The loss drops the Beavers to 2-4 on the season, while the Stars won their third straight contest to bump their record to 4-4.
After neither team could garner a hit through an inning and a half, Dominican broke it open with three runs in the second and another in the third off starter Kevin Every (Zanesville/West Muskingum) to take a 4-0 lead through three frames.
Daniel Supple continued to mow down Bluffton batters, giving up just four base hits through five innings of work. The Beavers finally got to him in the sixth inning as Clayton Siders (Delaware/Worthington Christian) turned on a 2-2 pitch and drove it over the fence in left field to cut the deficit to 4-1. A single from Jason Colliver (Beavercreek) and a double to right put two in scoring position. A single from Austin Prosser (Galion) knocked in Colliver to make it a two-run game before the Stars finally got out of the inning.
Dominican would take advantage of two Bluffton errors in the bottom of the sixth to score two more runs and take the four-run advantage right back.
DU reliever Robert Bavone came in to finish off the contest and threw three innings of one-hit baseball to stall the Beaver offense, while Dominican added four more in the eighth to cap off the 10-2 victory over Bluffton.
The Beavers struggled on the bump as Kevin Every started the contest, giving up four runs on six hits in just three innings for his first loss of the season. Brother Austin Every (Zanesville/West Muskingum) tossed 2.1 innings and struck out four batters while giving up one run on two hits. Garrett Siefer (Maumee) surrendered four earned over his 2.1 innings of work while freshman Raymond Richard (Taylor, Mich./John F. Kennedy) recorded the final out for the Beavers.
The leader on offense was Jason Colliver, who went 3-for-4 and with three singles and a run scored. Clayton Siders added two hits, including his sixth-inning bomb to left field. Austin Prosser also chipped in with two hits for the Beavers.
Bluffton returns to action for two games on Friday, March 11 as the Beavers continue play from the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Bluffton will take on Rockford University at 12 p.m. and Wisconsin-Lutheran College at 3 p.m.
