"Beauty Is Something to Love"
Maybe the desire to make something beautiful
is the piece of God that is inside each of us.
-Mary Oliver, "Franz Marc's Blue Horses"
Because beauty is not truth, or justice, or love.
Because it is something to love.
-Jeff Gundy, "Inquiry into the Nature of Beauty, or the Tale of the King of the Cats"
This lecture/multi-media presentation will include poems, images, music, and reflections that will challenge you to consider beauty-how we experience it, respond to it, and try to create it-in new ways. We will explore how beauty is intertwined with our search for truth, justice, peace, and indeed just about everything that makes us human beings, citizens, and children of God.
No special preparation for writing in response to this lecture is needed, except to come ready to reflect deeply, honestly, and freshly on these big questions.
