Tiffany Carnes

Junior dietetics major from Troy, Ohio

Finding the perfect school.
As a high school senior, Tiffany Carnes, a junior from Troy, Ohio, had crafted a long list of colleges from which to choose. Looking at Bluffton’s Web site, she realized that the school had everything she was looking for, including all four majors that interested her, strong Christian values and great financial aid packages. The school colors even matched her favorite color—purple!

Working on campus.
Tiffany is in her second year of working for the admissions office. She is a “telecounselor” and assists the admissions counselors. Tiffany calls high school students who show interest in Bluffton and answers questions they may have. She also does filing, organizing, typing and other office-related tasks. Her favorite thing about working in the admissions office is the positive environment. “The people are just so helpful and have great attitudes,” she says. “It’s an awesome atmosphere!”

Studying dietetics.
Tiffany is majoring in dietetics at Bluffton. In addition to food and nutrition classes, she has taken many science classes, including organic chemistry, cell chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. “The classes are challenging,” Tiffany says, “but the professors are very helpful. I was in my chemistry professor’s office every day, and he was patient with me, helping me write better papers.” After graduating, Tiffany plans to complete a 10-month internship with a hospital to learn more about community nutrition, food service, clinical work and working one-on-one with patients. She hopes to work in children’s nutrition, especially with child obesity.

Being involved.
Even though Tiffany’s studies take up a lot of time, she still finds opportunities to be involved on campus. She enjoys events planned by Marbeck Center Board (MCB), such as bi-weekly Bingo nights where students win useful prizes like detergent and Ramen noodles. Tiffany is also involved in the Family Consumer Science Association (FCSA), a group for dietetics, wellness and apparel and design majors. The group recently hosted a dinner to raise money for a local food pantry. Tiffany encourages all students who are looking at going to college to follow their passion. “Step out of your comfort zone,” she says, “because God may use you to encourage others and bring them closer to him.”

Tiffany Carnes '09 Tiffany Carnes '09 I have been a hall chaplain this past year. Each week I held Bible Studies in Neufeld Hall. I also had movie nights and we all made breakfast together one morning. I learned to be myself and trust and depend on God. Tiffany Carnes '09 Tiffany Carnes '09 My favorite class so far has to be Food Science. In this class we were able to learn the make-up of different foods and how to put them together. The weekly taste tests really opened me up to trying new foods.
