Bluffton University - Colin Kriegel
Bluffton senior interning with ESPN Radio in Lima
Colin Kriegel figures his past success at winning free stuff on the radio, along
with interest in music, probably fueled his desire for a career on the airwaves. But
when he came to Bluffton three years ago, the Delphos, Ohio, resident was unaware
the university had a campus station.
That soon changed, however, as Kriegel, who switched his major to communication after
his first semester, became a disc jockey at WBWH his sophomore year and was assistant
station manager last year. This year, he will be sports director a fitting follow-up
to his internship this summer at Sports Radio 93.1 The Fan, ESPN Radio in Lima.
Kriegel is serving as an assistant producer on the popular SportsTalk with Koza.
He normally handles such details as introductory music and working with guest callers
to host Vince Koza. He also does some on-air work when Koza is off and Aaron Matthews,
a producer on the show, fills the host s chair.
When he was younger, Kriegel listened to Matthews, then a DJ, on Lima s former WZOQ-FM,
92 Zoo. He s basically who inspired me to get into radio, the Bluffton senior says.
I was one of those young, obsessive fans always calling in. More recently, he used
the power of social networking to correspond with Matthews, which, with help from
Bluffton s communication department, led to his internship.
He believes his various duties at WBWH have helped prepare him for a communications
career, as have public relations courses taught by communication faculty members Dan
Fultz and Zachary Walton, and Fultz s radio production class. Different areas I ve
gotten to look at have helped guide me where I want to go, says Kriegel, who has
also done promotions work for 93.1 s sister country station, 92.1 The Frog, as part
of his internship.
My dream is to work for the Cincinnati Reds as a broadcaster, but I love PR and advertising,
so maybe I ll do that with a radio station after graduating next year, Kriegel says.
It would be nice to be able to do a little of everything.
