Participant information

Competition format

  • Students will be provided access to two short articles to read prior to the competition.
  • A 45 minute lecture will be delivered by Dr. Ross Kaufmann at the competition.
  • Students can take notes during the lecture.
  • Each student will have approximately 90 minutes to complete an essay in response to a question provided.

Readings for the competition

  • Students are expected to have read the assigned readings prior to the competition. Time will not be set aside during the competition.
  • The readings can be brought with you to the competition. However, no additional materials can be utilized to help you write your essay.
  • There are two readings assigned for the 2012 competition. Both articles can be accessed on-line (see below). If you have problems accessing the readings, please contact the admissions office.

After the competition

  • Each essay will be read and scored by two Bluffton faculty members.
  • Winners of the four premier scholarships will be determined by essay score, GPA and ACT/SAT results
  • All students attending will be awarded an additional $1,000 annual scholarship to Bluffton (worth $4,000).
