Service learning

More than just an opportunity to give back to the community, service-learning is a class assignment that helps students think in a different way about the course content while cultivating a sense of civic responsibility. Several courses incorporate service-learning, including the junior-level general education course Issues in Modern America, English Colloquium, Introduction to Social Work and several of the honors courses.

In fall term 2007, approximately 50 students are participating in service-learning for Issues in Modern America. They are working at the Bradfield Community Center, Elm Street Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Memorial Home, Maple Crest, Maljadelee Tender Care (daycare), the W.O.R.T.H center, Marimor Industries, Our Daily Bread soup kitchen, Urban Minority Alcohol and Drug Abuse Outreach Program and Toledo Soup Kitchen. Honors students are volunteering for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and with the Ottawa flood clean-up.

At Bluffton, you’ll also have the opportunity to volunteer in the community through several student life organizations, such as Diakonia and Habitat for Humanity.
