The Writer/Communications Specialist is responsible to develop ideas, research, write, edit and publish a wide variety of stories that advance the university’s mission and reputation. The staff writer typically provides in-person coverage of many campus events and student and faculty accomplishments for regional and Mennonite media. The writer develops feature stories and alumni and donor profiles for Bluffton Magazine and communicates Bluffton's mission, values and human interest stories to the university’s constituents. The writer publishes communications and stories in prose and for the Web and social media. The writer manages the university's news service and student writers. As a member of the PR staff, the writer assists with planning and coordination of public relations responsibilities including internal communications, special events and media relations. The writer reports to the director of public relations and works closely with the PR director and VP for advancement on university communications projects.
Qualifications and experience:
A bachelors degree in journalism, writing, communication or a related field is required. Relevant experience should include some combination of: five years writing/editing background, preferably with a media outlet, including interviewing skills and demonstrated understanding of writing assignments and ability to meet deadlines; demonstrated experience with news service, media relations; ability to work with social media and the Web and related technology applications.
Compensation
The appointment is a full-time, 12 month position; salary is commensurate with education and experience within the university pay scale.
