Maynard Building

Romanesque Revival building Like the more flamboyant Pioneer Building also in this historic district, this sandstone and gray brick building owes to Louis Sullivan as well as Richardson. Like taller early skyscrapers, this five-story building has the sense of a base, a shaft, and a top. The windows in the base as well as at the top of the shaft are arched. Clear divisions with belt courses isolate these three areas and the top is capped with a cornice and corbelling. The recessed spandrels have a checkerboard motif. The arched entrance portal This squatty arch is supported by double columns--red marble with elaborately carved capitals.
