East Building, National Gallery of Art--page 3 (of three pages)

I. M. Pei
1968-78

Views of the interior

The untitled mobile (1977), commissioned of Alexander Calder, is his largest at 80 feet in diameter, but a mere 900 pounds.

The large lobby interior has a skylighted atrium with bridges connecting gallery areas and a slowly moving Calder mobile. Some critics object to the large amount of space devoted to public milling and meeting contrasted with the small amount devoted to gallery exhibition space. A related question: is the building or the art it contains the main attraction?

Views of Anthony Caro's National Gallery Ledge Piece and Woman, a woven hanging after Joan Miró, woven by Josep Royo.

See additional sculpture both inside and outside the East Wing.

Views of the upper level and skylight

A plaza with a fountain connects the new and old building. Below in the restaurant and lobby are skylights and a waterfall.
