Addition to Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College

Venturi Scott Brown and Associates
1977

The buildings that house Oberlin College's art collection as well as the college art department include the original Allen Memorial Art Museum, a Tuscan Renaissance building by Cass Gilbert, and the post-modern addition by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Associates.

The whole complex from the front and two views of the addition showing the red patterns on the original building that served as the inspiration for the checkerboard front of this post-modern addition

Views of the entrance

Oddly placed windows are a trademark of this firm's style. See, for example, the Dixwell Fire Station in New Haven.

Views of the side

View of the rear, of the service entrance, and a detail of the wooden column on the second floor porch above the service entrance

Post-modern fun--this disproportionate wooden column, with its enormous "Ionic" capital, hidden in a tiny alcove at the rear of the building
