Kennedy Memorial

Philip Johnson
1970

This square memorial in the center of a city square is sometimes defined as "minimalist," with some kinship to Johnson's Pennzoil Place. This "cube," floating on its tiny footings, has a kind of quiet abstract elegance. Landscaping is also minimalist.
This sacred space, a kind of room open to the sky, is 50' x 50' x 30' and is constructed of cast concrete. Concrete units are bound vertically with concealed steel cables.

Two narrow vertical voids provide entrances on opposite walls. A dark granite square block occupies the center with the simple inscription of "John Fitzgerald Kennedy."
