El Alcázar--page 8 (of nine pages): Garden of El Estanque

Galería del Grutesco This section provides a backdrop for the Jardín del Estanque and is built into the ancient Almohad wall. This Mannerist triumphal arch is executed in a rustic style with real and fake rocks. Milanese architect Vermondo Resta renovated and designed this part of the wall between 1612 and 1621. The niches on the lower level were once filled with mythological paintings which have since been retouched and repainted
		Jardín del Estanque This garden was named after the large water reservoir which formed the basis for the pool, a cistern which once collected water for the palace and for irrigation. The northern side of the area (the yellow pavilion) gives access to the Palacio Gótico.
The Mercury Fountain designed by Diego de Pesquera and cast by BartoloméMorel (1575) Mercury stands on a pedestal with cherubs and monsters with water spouts in their mouths.
