The Alhambra: Generalife

begun about 1260

Although Generalife is sometimes translated as the "garden of paradise" or the "garden of feasts," the more correct translation is "garden of the architect." This area is a combination of flowers, trees, formal gardens, miradors, and galleries. It was used as a summer residence for the Nasrid kings. To reach the top, it is about a five minute walk from the palaces in the Alhambra through a lovely avenue of cypress trees--the lower garden.

Patio of the Acequia (or Court of the Long Pond)

There are porticoed pavilions on the north and south ends. This courtyard is a long garden with raised paths in the form of a cross with a fountain at the center intersection. The long pool also has many water sprays.
