A very popular Pop art symbolIn 1976, for Philadelphia's bicentennial, this metal sculpture was erected in a park at Kennedy Plaza, which is the southern terminus of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. This famous arrangement of the four letters has become a kind a cultural icon, appearing first as a painting and in various permutations since--even Christmas cards produced by the Museum of Modern Art. During the Vietnam War it became a substitute peace symbol. The water in the fountain behind it is tinted variously for symbolic reasons. I don't know why it was violet on this particular day.
