Church of Guadalupe--page 1 (of three pages)

begun 1694; completed in 18th century






Dedicated to the patroness of Mexico, this church records on its facade four apparitions of the Virgin in pictures with Latin text below the scene. (See page 2.) Like many churches in the area it uses the famous local ceramic tiles--talavera--in colorful patterns on the facade.

 
 

Central arch outlined with blue and white tiles with geometric patterns, floral designs and bodiless angel heads

 

Angels in the spandrels, zigzag tile patterns and floral panels;
tower with solomonic columns and elaborate stucco decoration
