The Atheneum--page 4 of 5 (detail views of the south and east facades)

Richard Meier
1978-79

The south facade

The east facade

The ramp, at a 5 degree angle to the east facade, leads in the direction of the historic village. The generally blank east wall indicates the interior auditorium.

The exterior stairwell "box" is at a 45 degree angle to the facade. Spatial variations such as this, ambiguities in inside/outside views, and various observation points characterize this late modern work.

Views of the stairwell from the east, from the south, and from the near south side
