Pompeii: Houses--page 2 (of 7 pages)

before 79 C.E.

The House of the Vettii, 2nd century BCE; rebuilt 62-79 CE

This is one of the best-preserved houses in Pompeii. Like most town houses there, it has a reception area in the front; this room--the atrium--has an opening in the roof to admit light and rainwater, the latter being collected in the impluvium in the center of the floor of the atrium.

Grooved track for sliding doors

Wall paintings--some with simulated architecture--and decorative molding
