The Weltstadthaus or Peek & Cloppenburg department store

Renzo Piano
2005

This five-storey building on central Cologne's Schildergasse, the city's shopping street, is the flagship store for Peek & Cloppenburg. It is dramatic mixture of the traditional and the super modern with glass, steel, stone and wood as the main materials. The skin consists of 6,800 individual glass panes sculpted in a curving form. It also has a glazed dome. Piano may have been thinking of garden buildings like palm houses and orangeries since this store for high fashion has a light and transparent character.
