Representative Office of the State of Baden-Württemberg

Dietrich Bangert
1998-2000

In Germany's southwest corner, Baden-Württemberg is the third biggest of the German States. It is characterized by the Black Forest and the Rhine Plain with forest making up about 40 per cent of its total area. This German state has a kind of "embassy" in the embassy district on Berlin's famous Tiergarten Street located close to the centers of federal power. This late modern building, almost minimalist, has a kind of sleek elegance with an inviting and protected entrance. The glistening white building has a tall granite foundation and the various angles, windows and openings on the front create interesting shadows and formations.

According to the Braun guide, this design was awarded first prize in a competition in 1997. Although I could not view the interior, the Guide says "the room series is made up of foyer, skylight room, loggia and terrace leading to a garden courtyard which opens out there with the same large gestures as on the entrance side" (288-9).

The coat of arms

Lion, stag and griffon – the symbols and traditions of the regions which make up the state are united in the Baden-Württemberg coat of arms. The three lions embody Schwaben, the stag is the symbol of Württemberg, and the griffon stands for Baden.
