Davenport House

Isaiah Davenport
1820-21

South elevation, East State Street, overlooking Columbia Square

Davenport, a builder-architect, built this Georgian-style residence in brick, even though he was a master carpenter. His carpentry skills are evident in the interior of this residence, which is open to the public. The proposed demolition of this house served as a catalyst for the restoration efforts in Savannah, which have progressed apace since those first efforts in the 1950's.
